It was designed during my master's thesis at Politecnico di Milano about games and storytelling.  It's a little prototype to test a framework I developed, concerning how interactive artefacts could be designed using a narrative approach, focusing on the storyworld and its elements and themes to extrapolate mechanics and narrative meaning. Edgar Allan Poe's story The Mask of the Red Death mysterious and distressing atmospheres lend themselves well to this type of work because they allow you to explore the unspoken, what it appears to be, and what it could be.
